NEW WHITELAND, Ind. — A fourth-grade student at Break-O-Day Elementary School in New Whiteland allegedly brought a gun to school Tuesday.
Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation officials say the student showed the .22 caliber semi-automatic hand gun to classmates. The gun was not loaded, and the clip was not at school. No other threats were made to students.
A student told a teacher about the gun, who in turn notified police. The child who brought the gun was taken into police custody.
Indiana law requires students who bring a firearm to school to be expelled for one calendar year.
Superintendent Patrick Spray issued a letter to parents saying, “We are greatly appreciative to the child who brought the information forward, and we ask that you please take this opportunity to remind your children about the dangers of weapons and discuss the importance of reporting situations like this to school staff.”
