FRANKLIN, Ind. — Police are getting the word out about a Microsoft computer scam after a local resident fell victim.
The caller poses as a Microsoft employee, or contract worker, claiming they have been notified to fix an issue such as storage space or a virus.
The scammer, with a middle eastern dialect, asked for $99 for computer diagnostics. The victim was able to view her computer during the event which took two hours.
The victim received another telephone call claiming her software was too old and her money needed to be refunded. However, there was a transaction error and $999 was deposited.
She was advised to obtain a Walmart Money Gram for $850 and send it to a fake address in Wyoming.
