INDIANAPOLIS — Former Indiana Gov. Edgar D. Whitcomb, who was born and raised in Jennings County, passed away Thursday at the age of 98.
Whitcomb was born in Hayden in 1917, served in World War II and practiced law in Seymour and North Vernon.
He was elected Secretary of State for Indiana in 1966 and Governor in 1968. Whitcomb was the last governor constitutionally bound to a single term in office.
Upon his retirement, he took up sailing, purchasing a 30-foot sailboat and undertaking solo voyages across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
