COLUMBUS, Ind. — One person was injured in a cooking fire Tuesday night, according to the German Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The house was full of smoke when firefighters arrived in the 6800 block of Fremont Drive around 9:45 p.m.
Crews determined it was a cooking fire confined to the kitchen sink.
The woman was cooking dinner when she started to warm up grease. She left the kitchen to let the dog outside and returned to find the grease on fire. She moved the burning pot into the sink and turned on the faucet which caused the grease to erupt in flames.
She was treated for burns at Columbus Regional Health.
Firefighters are using the incident to remind residents to not put water on flaming grease but rather use a class K extinguisher or cover the pot. Also, turn off the heat source and don’t leave pots and pans unattended.
