COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Columbus man was arrested after a pursuit that damaged a car from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.
Police were called to investigate a report of an intoxicated driver at the intersection of National Road and Washington Street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. A Columbus police officer found a vehicle in the area that was weaving and couldn’t stay in a lane. When the officer attempted to initiate a stop the driver fled on what became a 45-minute chase. The chase went from Columbus to Taylorsville and back.
The driver, Stephen Fields, 25, attempted to drive into oncoming traffic, nearly struck an Indiana State Police car, and eventually crashed into a sheriff’s car causing it to hit a tree. After Fields hit a tire deflation device he stopped in the 1900 block of Wallace Avenue and fled on foot. A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy captured him a short time later. After the suspect a breathalyzer test, officers obtained a warrant and completed a blood draw from Fields.
Fields was charged with possession of a syringe, possession of methamphetamine, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, aggressive driving, resisting arrest with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement on foot, criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of an accident. He was taken to the Bartholomew Jail and placed on a 48-hour hold.
No injuries were reported.
