COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation will reopen the State Road 46 bridge over Fishers Fork Creek two miles west of State Road 9 this afternoon. The $1.3 million project was completed about 17 days ahead of schedule.
The new roundabout on U.S. 31 at Southern Crossing will open this evening almost two weeks ahead of schedule. Motorists will now have access to U.S. 31 and County Road 900 South in all directions. The closure, due to the bridge replacement on County Road 900 South over Sand Creek, will remain in effect until late November.
Law enforcement encourages motorists to enter slowly and yield to traffic already in the roundabout. Drivers should always enter and exit a roundabout by making right turns. Don’t stop in the roundabout, proceed to your point of exit, signal and turn right.
Roundabouts have a proven record of reducing accidents—especially serious accidents with injuries. They virtually eliminate head-on and high-speed right-angle crashes, they reduce overall intersection mishaps by 75 percent, and reduce serious-injury crashes by 80 percent.
The closure on U.S. 31 between Bartholomew County Road 900S and Jackson County Road 1100N remains in effect.
