NORTH VERNON, Ind. — North Vernon Police diffused a potentially deadly situation Wednesday afternoon.
Officers were called for a welfare check in the 300 block of Gilbert Street around 5:00 p.m. Police were told there was a male subject, later identified as Jason Lafollette, 39, with a gun.
Upon arrival, law enforcement knocked several times on the door and windows of the home but received no response. After gaining entry, police found Lafollette lying in a bed with a gun. When Lafollette saw police he pointed the gun to his chest. At that point officers pulled back to a safe location, began to negotiate, and called the Jennings County Emergency Response Team and Indiana State Police. For the next four-and-a-half hours police attempted to get Lafolette to drop the gun and exit the home.
Lafollette finally surrendered to police at 9:30 p.m. He was arrested for resisting law enforcement and is being held in the Jennings County Jail awaiting a mental health evaluation.
