FRANKLIN, Ind. — Construction begins next week on a 4-year road improvement project in downtown Franklin at a cost of about $20 million. The undertaking will completely change the look of the downtown area on Jefferson Street from U.S. 31 to Interstate 65.
The initial phase of work will require Jefferson Street to be shut down between Walnut and Main Streets. That is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 22. The work on Jefferson Street from North Main Street to the Admiral gas station is scheduled to be complete in December of 2016.
Phase II of the project is scheduled to begin next year in March, and be complete in July of 2017. That work will focus on Jefferson Street from the Admiral gas station to U.S. 31. Jefferson Street from U.S. 31 to Vaught Street will remain open until the final four weeks of the phase.
The entire venture includes eight phases, and is scheduled to be 100 percent finished by November of 2019.
Features of the project include new sidewalks, storm sewer, landscaping, buried utilities and a roundabout at King Street and Eastview Drive.
