GREENWOOD, Ind. — The city of Greenwood will enhance the voluntary recycling program to increase participation, decrease carbon emissions, and reduce the amount of waste taken to the landfill.
Improvements include new 96-gallon wheeled bins to replace the 18-gallon bins. The 96-gallon bin uses about 10 more square inches of space than the 18-gallon bin. Bi-weekly pickup will be offered and no additional fees are planned.
“Greenwood’s new recycling program will both modernize the process and provide a significant positive impact on the environment,” said Mayor Mark W. Myers. “The larger bins and anticipated increase in participation will greatly decrease our community’s carbon footprint. Additionally, more recycling and less trash decreases costs and increases revenue to the program, allowing Greenwood to maintain lower rates in the future.”
A trial program featuring the changes has been implemented in the Homecoming neighborhood and has resulted in a 50 percent increase in participation.
