GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood woman lost $1,800 in a Craigslist scam involving a rental property.
About two weeks ago, the victim met a couple who identified themselves as Scott and Shannon Marcum at a property they has advertised on Craigslist as being for rent. The victim agreed to the terms, signed a basic rental agreement and gave the couple $900 as a deposit and $900 for the first rent payment. The couple gave the victim keys and promised to have some minor repairs and painting done. The victim occupied the home but became suspicious when the repairs were not done and she could not make contact with the Marcums.
Sunday, a couple came to the door to inform them the house belonged to their adult children and wanted to know why the victim was in the home. The couple and the victim then contacted the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators are following leads to hopefully find the Marcums.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says always take extra time to verify identities, ownership of property for sale or lease, and consult with family members or a trusted friend before entering into an agreement with people you don’t know.
