BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The city of Bloomington has changed the names of two holidays in order to make them inclusive. Columbus Day will now become “Fall Holiday” and Good Friday will become “Spring Holiday.”
Mayor John Hamilton made the announcement to city employees Friday via a note that included, “We are terrifically proud of our diverse workforce at the city. That diversity makes us stronger and more representative of the public we proudly serve,” Hamilton said. “These updated names for two days of well-merited time off is another way we can demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity.”
Good Friday is part of the Christian celebration of Easter. Columbus Day is celebrated to recognize Christopher Columbus’ exploration and discovery of the “new world.”
