INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Governor-elect Eric Holcomb has appointed Franklin Mayor Joe McGuinness to serve as commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation. McGuinness is in his second term as mayor.
Johnson County Republican leaders will begin caucusing to find a replacement. Residents interested in being considered for the post may submit an application and be interviewed by the precinct committee members. When Franklin City Council meets next week, it will select the new council president and that person will also serve as the interim-mayor.
McGuinness will assume the duties of INDOT commissioner on Monday. McGuiness will be responsible for a $1.8 billion budget, 3,500 employees, 11,000 miles of roads, and 6,000 bridges. He will continue to call Franklin home.
