INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Republican State Representative Jim Lucas recognized the U.S.S. Indiana Commission Committee during the General Assembly this week. The committee worked to raise money to organize the construction of 377-foot, fast attack nuclear submarine. Committee chairman Ray Shearer, commander Jesse Zimbauer, and master chief Lafredrick Herring attended the ceremony.
“This is the first naval vessel in more than 70 years that will bear the name Indiana,” Lucas said. “This committee has put forth tremendous efforts to connect our state with the remarkable service men and women who will be serving on the USS Indiana.”
The submarine is using components manufactured by more than 50 Hoosier companies and will be able to project power over land with Tomahawk missiles, conduct electronic surveillance and deploy special operations forces.
