COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus Fire Department officials say a discarded cigarette started a fire that resulted in about $20,000 in damage to a vacant home early Thursday in the 2200 block of Cherry Street.
First responders were on the scene within six minutes after a 2 a.m. call from a passerby. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke near the rear of the home before an interior attack was conducted. The origin of the blaze was quickly located and extinguished. No injuries were reported.
