INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A bill that could return prayer to schools has passed the Indiana House of Representatives. House Bill 1024 was written by Democrat John Bartlett of Indianapolis and would direct school systems to adopt policies that would allow students to pray out loud at school events. The legislation encourages schools to develop religious curriculum and protects students who wear religious clothing.
Some oppose the measure because it could highlight non-religious students. Others claim that freedom of religion is already recognized in schools.
Representative Woody Burton from House District 58 in Johnson County co-authored the bill.
After being passed in the House by a 83-12 vote, the measure now will be sent to the senate. A link to the proposal is online at iga.in.gov/legislative/2017/bills/house/1024.
