COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins Inc. has announced plans to cut water usage by 50 percent by the year 2020 from a baseline of 2010.
In 2014, the company made a 33 percent reduction part of the 2020 Environmental Sustainability Plan. The company has been able to increase the actual reduction to 42 percent as of the third quarter of 2016. In light of this performance company leaders have reset the goal.
“Thanks to the hard work of our employees around the world, we have surpassed our initial target, but we know we should do more and are raising the bar with a revised goal,” said Brian Mormino, Executive Director of Environmental Strategy & Compliance.
The revised goal represents a savings of 763 million gallons of water since 2010. That is enough water for 395,000 people to consume, for sanitation and hygiene, for one year.
Across the worldwide operation the company has installed low-flow fixtures, bioswales and regenerative dynos. Cummins has also implemented low water use landscaping, stopped water leaks and worked to add efficiencies in facility operations.
Wednesday, March 22 is World Water Day.
