COLUMBUS, Ind.–An officer with the Columbus Police Department was injured Monday evening during a fight with a suspect who had multiple warrants for his arrest. Authorities at the Columbus Police Department say an officer encountered Jacob Rice, 34, of Columbus, near 25th Street and Hawcreek Avenue around 7:15 p.m., and deployed his Taser to stop Rice from running. However, Rice was able to get back on his feet and another struggle ensued. During the altercation, Rice allegedly pulled the officer’s police radio off his uniform shirt and punched him several times in the face. Another officer arrived a short time later and tased Rice a second time. He was eventually subdued and taken into custody. Rice was taken to Columbus Regional Health for medical clearance and later transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on the two local warrants, as well as on preliminary charges of Battery on a Police Officer and Resisting Law Enforcement. The suspect remains incarcerated on a 48-hour hold.
The injured officer was treated for a laceration below his left eye and released from Columbus Regional Health.
