GREENWOOD, Ind.–The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office warns Greenwood residents to beware of scam activity in the area. The sheriff’s department says that recently two people have been subjected to fraud attempts by suspects seeking credit card information. One case involved a proposed sale of a piano on eBay. The “buyer” sent a $2150 check for an $800 piano, and then asked the seller/victim to wire the over-payment $1350 to an address. Of course, the $2150 check is bogus and the piano “buyer” is trying to get $1350 from the seller/victim. Luckily, the would-be victim denied the request.
In the other case, a customer received a fake text message, stating that their ATM card had been frozen and they would need to call a specific (317) number. When called, the victim discovered a full account number for the card was requested.
