INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.–An Indianapolis Colts linebacker is dead following a traffic accident along I-70 early Sunday morning. Authorities at the Indiana State Police say that Edwin Jackson, 26, of Atlanta, Ga., and his ride-sharing driver were killed when they were allegedly struck by Alex Gonsales, 37, of Indianapolis, who is suspected of drunk driving at the time of the incident.
Jackson’s driver, Jeffrey Monroe, 54, of Avon, had pulled the car onto the shoulder of the interstate after Jackson complained of feeling ill. Both men were standing outside the vehicle when Gonsales drove off the roadway and hit them and the vehicle. An Indiana State trooper was a short distance behind Gonsales when he noticed Gonsales’s truck making erratic movements. As the officer was driving closer to the scene the crash, he struck one of the victims, who had been thrown into traffic from the impact of the initial collision.
Gonsales attempted to flee on foot, but was caught a short time later and transported to Marion County Jail. It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license. The result of the test for intoxication is pending.
