COLUMBUS, Ind.–Indiana University has a new home and a new name for its Master of Architecture program. The Indiana University Foundation (IUF) acquired the former Republic Newspaper building to house the J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program. The School of Art, Architecture, and Design will move into the building in August and will begin offering courses in the fall with electives being offered at IU Bloomington.
The Columbus Community Education Coalition will handle the renovation of the building. IUF President Michael McRobbie and his wife have pledged $500 million to endow a professorship in modern architecture in the school.
The IU degree program will blend architecture with principles of art and design; provide students with a background in community partnership; and feature a strong international component and access to courses, seminars, exhibitions and other opportunities through the university.
The program is being developed in collaboration with the Columbus community, including the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives and the CivicLab, a program of the Community Education Coalition. An initial class of about 20 students is expected.
