FRANKLIN, Ind.–Franklin Community Schools (FCS) has released the results of the second round of testing conducted by environmental contractors EnviroForensics at Needham and Webb Elementary Schools. The examination followed ground and air sampling done last week that found no traces of volatile substances thought to have originated from the former Amphenol Corporation building, located approximately 2,500 feet from both school buildings. Contamination at that site was recently cited by the Edison Wetlands Association as the potential cause for a sharp spike in pediatric cancer and autoimmune disease rates.
Of the 17 samples collected, all came back either non-detect or below the residential sub-slab vapor screening level. EnviroForensics sampled for the same volatile organic compounds as in previous tests.
Despite the first round of testing providing the same conclusions, IDEM and FCS both agreed to carry on as if the results had been returned positive. With the start of school set for Thursday, they wanted to be cautious.
