COLUMBUS, Ind. – On Tuesday evening, Columbus City Council passed on second reading the designation of the 700 block of Sycamore Street as an Economic Development Target Area and also approved a tax abatement for the developers of the block.
Final approval must come from Bartholomew County. The block is the former site of the old St. Bartholomew Church.
The main portion of the famed structure will be converted into apartments. Adjacent townhouses and apartments are to be built by Bloomington-based Rubicon Development. The developer intends to preserve the church’s historic integrity as much as possible, including the stained-glass windows.
Several council members noted that the project fits well with the Envision Columbus goal of offering more high-density housing on the city’s south side.
