WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today is Memorial Day, an American holiday. It is not just the third day of a three-day weekend. Memorial Day honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military.
Throughout south-central Indiana, all over the state, and across the county, ceremonies are taking place to pay tribute to these fallen heroes.
The holiday was originally known as Decoration Day in the years following the Civil War. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1971. Many Hoosiers observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and hosting family picnics and gatherings.
Each year, a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m., local time.
Unofficially, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season.
