EDINBURGH, Ind. – Early Sunday morning, emergency crews were dispatched to northbound Interstate 65, near the 82-mile marker in Shelby County, after a report of a single-vehicle crash. Indiana State Police (ISP) 911 operators received several calls saying that a vehicle was off the roadway and both occupants were severely injured.
Shelby County Sheriff Department deputies along with medics were the first to arrive on the scene, and they immediately requested a medical helicopter. Despite life-saving efforts, Kenneth Cubbage Jr., 41, of Freetown, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His mother, Connie Cubbage, 62, was the passesnger and she was transported to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital by ambulance. She is listed in stable condition.
ISP investigators have not determined the cause of the accident, however, evidence at the scene indicates that after it left the expressway, the vehicle hit a tree causing it to roll over several times.
As a result of the crash, both northbound lanes of I-65 closed for a brief time.
