INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – United States Attorney Josh Minkler announced Thursday that 24-year-old Darion Harris was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Sarah Barker for his tole in the murder and robbery of Scott Maxie, the owner of a federally licensed gun store near North Vernon.
The 2014 crime began when Harris, Darryle Worthen, and Dejuan Worthen went to Maxie’s store to see what was inside. Afterward, they drove back to Indianapolis with plans to return the following day and rob the owner. When they returned on September 21, 2014, Darryl Worthen shot and killed Maxie with a semiautomatic handgun. Then, all the defendants reportedly stole 45 firearms, some of which were sold and distributed.
“This type of violence is something no family or community should have to face,” said Minkler. “Judge Barker sent a loud and clear message that gun violence will not be tolerated in the Southern District of Indiana and those committing violent crimes will be held accountable.”
