SCOTTSBURG, Ind. – Scott County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Impala on Thursday evening when the car ran a red light in Scottsburg. After skipping through the light, officers say the vehicle continued to drive recklessly.
When it approached Interstate 65, the Impala entered the expressway going north. Deputies followed in pursuit with their lights and sirens activated, but the vehicle allegedly refused to stop. At the Austin exit of I-65, the driver attempted to get off of the interstate. The car left the roadway and flipped several times, ejecting the driver.
The operator of the vehicle, identified as Jesse Murphy, 30, of Edinburgh, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Indiana State Police is investigating the incident and report that the driver might have been involved in an attempted theft at a Scottburg Walmart prior to the pursuit.
