COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Review Board was briefed on Thursday evening by Columbus Police Department (CPD) spokesman Mike Richardson and Human Rights Commission office director Aida Ramirez on a formal complaint filed with the police department on April 18. It concerned an April 7 incident in which a woman alleged that someone forced her to become intoxicated and then attempted to sexually assault her.
The victim was supposedly uncooperative with investigators the night of the incident but agreed the next day to have a rape kit conducted at Columbus Regional Health. A supplemental report was filed on the basis of evidence gathered, but a delay in communication with the victim ensued. A review determined that a shift lieutenant had mistakenly mislabeled the report, causing it to not be forwarded to the detective division, thus causing the hold up that spurred the victim’s complaint.
According to CPD and the Human Rights Commission, the matter now goes to mediation.
