COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Commissioners held their weekly meeting Monday and discussed a new proposed high water ordinance that would increase fines for drivers who ignore road closed/high water traffic signs.
Currently, if a driver ignores a high water sign, the fine is $140, but the new proposal would increase the penalty to $500. The idea behind the new proposal is that raising the fine would make drivers less tempted to drive through high water areas and put themselves and rescuers in danger.
The conversation surrounding the proposal was lengthy, and the commissioners decided that it would be best to table the discussion to a later meeting.
