COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) arrested two people late Sunday after officers say they determined that an 11-month-old child was left alone in a residence that law enforcement considered to have poor living conditions.
Around 11 p.m., patrolmen were dispatched to the 1700 block of Elm Street in regards to a welfare check on a baby. When they arrived, they spoke to the resident, Bradly Longworth, 38, of Columbus, who had just walked up to the property. He allegedly told CPD that the infant had been picked up earlier by a friend and was not inside the residence.
Police say the child’s mother, Sarah Coe, 28, of Columbus, showed up a short time later and she said that the baby was actually inside the home. When officers entered the house, they said the living conditions were deplorable and there was an overwhelming odor of animal urine and feces.
Both Coe and Longworth were arrested, transported to the Bartholomew County Jail, and preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent, a level six felony.
