COLUMBUS, Ind. – Each year, the third Friday of September holds special meaning for Bartholomew County citizens as they come together to recognize and honor soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Over 82,000 military personnel are still unaccounted for since WWII, and this Friday, September 20, prisoners of war and soldiers who went missing in action will be remembered. The community will honor them at the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans, behind the Bartholomew County Courthouse, in downtown Columbus, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Retired U.S. Army Chaplain, Colonel Charles Hobert McDaniel Jr., will be the keynote speaker as he tells the story of his father’s remains returning home to Vernon in 2018 after 68 years.
In addition to songs and an invocation, the ceremony will include a Rifle Volley and Taps by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
