TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) is mourning the loss of one of its own after a single-vehicle crash late Friday night. According to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles on his Facebook page, the accident claimed the life of Trooper Peter R. Stephan, 27, of Lafayette, who had served with the Indiana State Police Department for four years.
The preliminary investigation indicates Stephan, who was on his way to assist a fellow officer, was traveling north on Old State Road 25 at around 10:30 p.m. After entering a curve the car left the roadway for an undetermined reason, rolled at least one time, and struck a utility pole.
Trooper Stephan suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He is survived by his wife and six-month-old daughter.
“This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family. We will band together in support of Trooper Stephan’s family, friends, and co-workers,” said ISP Superintendent Douglas Carter.
