COLUMBUS, Ind. – A 29-year-old Columbus woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after The Columbus Police Department (CPD) received a report of a young juvenile playing unsupervised in the roadway, near Smith Street and McKinley Ave. Officers responded around 5:50 p.m. and say they found the child with a soiled diaper and a laceration on his ankle that was bleeding heavily. CPD requested paramedics to care for the toddler.
A witness told law enforcement they saw another child playing in front of a house in the 300 block of Smith Street. Police found the youngster, who they say came to the door of the residence holding a large pair of scissors.
After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with an adult, officers entered the home and allegedly found the mother, Teagan Gray, unconscious on the living room couch. They eventually awakened the woman and confirmed both children were hers. The mother supposedly told CPD she used methamphetamine earlier.
Gray was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where she was remanded on a level 5 felony charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury.
The Department of Child Services took custody of the two children.
