MADISON, Ind. – An Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper was shot Saturday morning during a standoff with a suspect in the 8000 block of East State Road 56, near Madison. The officer was identified as Master Trooper Joseph Livers.
The Indiana State Police-Versailles Post, along with officers from the Madison Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office responded to eastern Jefferson County at approximately 2:30 a.m., after receiving reports about an armed man firing shots from inside of a residence.
Upon arrival, officers assisted the other occupants of the home to safety. It was determined that the suspect, Wade R. Roark, 59, was still inside, so the ISP-South Zone SWAT Team was activated. Roark allegedly continued to fire his weapon through a hole in the basement wall.
Livers, an 18-year ISP veteran, was shot in the leg around 8 a.m., while positioned outside. Another trooper returned fire but Roark was not hit. The suspect soon exited the house and was taken into custody.
After immediate emergency aid at the site, Trooper Livers was taken to a Madison hospital and then to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening.
Roark now resides in the Jefferson County Jail where he is being held on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery, and criminal recklessness. Roark is expected to make his initial appearance in the Jefferson County Circuit Court early this week.
