COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) arrested Christopher Staggs, 38, of Austin, after an employee at a Columbus storage business saw a man acting suspiciously at the facility early this morning. Law enforcement responded to Storage Express, off of Indianapolis Road, at around 2 a.m., in regards to a man going to door-to-door inside the facility.
Police say they saw Staggs run toward a nearby shelter house, with a metal item in his hand. Officers said they made several announcements that they were going to deploy a service dog, but he did not respond. The police K-9 supposedly found the suspect hiding behind a nearby enclosed trailer and he was taken into custody.
CPD allegedly located bolt cutters and a syringe near where the man was hiding.
Staggs was arrested on preliminary charges of attempted theft, possession of a syringe, resisting law enforcement, and trespassing.
