COLUMBUS, Ind. – Two people were arrested on drug-related charges after a Columbus Police Department (CPD) K-9 alerted to narcotics during a Monday night traffic stop. Officers stopped a vehicle near 16th and Chestnut Streets for a minor traffic violation at around 11:40 p.m.
Law enforcement spoke with the driver, John Demerit, 39, and his passenger Carolyn Murrell, 38, both of Columbus, and requested a K-9 to the scene. The police dog supposedly picked up on the smell of narcotics and CPD allegedly found drug paraphernalia, prescription medication, and methamphetamine in the car.
Demerit and Murrell were taken into custody and transported to Bartholomew County Jail. Demerit was charged with possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a vehicle without obtaining a license. Murrell was booked for possession of a controlled substance.
