VERNON, Ind. – Indiana State Police (ISP) and the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office responded Wednesday morning to a fatal crash involving a school bus and another vehicle on State Road 7, at State Road 3, near Vernon.
The initial investigation by ISP surmised that a Jennings County School Corporation bus, being driven by Robert Ringer, 72, of North Vernon, was traveling southbound on S.R. 7. A truck, driven by Harry Palmer, 48, of North Vernon, was traveling northbound, also on S.R. 7.
Police say that Palmer apparently attempted to turn southbound onto S.R 3, in front of the bus, and the bus struck the passenger side of Palmer’s vehicle.
The bus driver, Robert Ringer, was not injured in the crash. However, a passenger on the bus, Mary Boyd, 74, of North Vernon, sustained fatal injuries. She was transported to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Palmer and a passenger in his vehicle were transported to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
Toxicology reports are pending at this time.
