COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Joint Narcotic’s Enforcement Team (JNET), along with the Columbus Police Department (CPD) Intelligence Lead Policing consisting of officers from the police department and the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), conducted an investigation that led to a traffic stop and the seizure of a substantial amount of heroin with a street value of approximately $8,400.
CPD officers and BCSO deputies stopped a vehicle on I-65, between Taylorsville and Edinburgh, after it was observed disregarding a light before entering the expressway. The driver was identified as Jacquise Reed, 21, of Indianapolis.
During the pullover, law enforcement said a strong odor of marijuana was detected. Police K-9 (Diesel) was summoned to the vehicle and supposedly alerted to the odor of narcotics. During the search of the suspect, officers said they could feel an object inside his pants.
Reed was transported to Bartholomew County Jail to utilize the jail’s body scanner. After the suspect was removed from the police car, officers searched the rear seat where he had been sitting and allegedly found a bag containing 85 grams of a substance that field-tested presumptively positive for the presence of heroin. Several oxycodone pills were also supposedly found in the subject’s pants.
Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers praised the officers involved saying, “The amount of heroin located during this traffic stop was obviously not for personal use but for distribution.”
Reed was arrested for dealing heroin, possession of heroin, possession of a narcotic drug, trafficking with an inmate, operating without ever receiving a license, and possession of marijuana. He is currently being held on a 48-hour hold with a $353,500 bond as investigators continue the case.
