COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office say a two-vehicle crash closed State Road 11, near County Road 200S, for a couple of hours on Monday morning.
According to witnesses, a van driven by Lester Solomon, 63, of Columbus, was heading northbound and crossed left of center and struck a pickup truck driven by Kenneth Blackburn, 44, of Indianapolis, head-on. Witnesses also allegedly told law enforcement that Soloman was weaving in the road before he crossed the centerline.
Deputies say the collision sent Blackburn’s truck into a utility pole causing a gas leak in the area. CPD reports that approximately six homes in the area were evacuated until the gas could be shut off.
Blackburn complained of pain but was not seriously injured. Officers say Solomon had a broken leg, broken shoulder, and a head injury.
The crash remains under investigation.
