COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to a report of a structure fire on Sunday in the 200 block of Hughes Street. Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported a heavy fire coming from a building in the back yard.
Firefighters arrived and observed a fire behind a detached garage at the address. CFD says they discovered a camping tent and the contents of a small metal storage building ablaze. Emergency crews were able to extinguish the fire and prevent any additional damages to the area.
Initially, investigators think the fire originated in a large tent that was being used for temporary housing. The property owner said a family member was living in the make-shift residence. The occupant said he was not in the tent at the time of the fire. A heating device was found inside the tent, but it could not be confirmed if it was operating at the time of the fire.
CFD says no injuries were reported and damages are estimated at $3,000.
