COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to a residential fire, at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, at 5235 Norway Ct. Crews were sent to the area after the homeowner saw flames on the front porch.
Property owners, Stephen and Lind Alis, told firefighters that they were inside their house and saw a flash near the home’s front porch light. The owners went outside to try to reach a garden hose, but flames blocked them from access to the hose, so they called CFD.
Emergency crews arrived and reported heavy fire and smoke conditions near the home’s front door and attached garage area. The blaze was quickly brought under control. Investigators say they believe the fire started because of a bird’s nest that was built inside a porch light, but the inquiry is ongoing.
Damage estimates are at $70,000. The Salvation Army is helping the family with emergency needs.
