CROTHERSVILLE, Ind. – UPDATE: ISP says the 21-year-old driver of the car that collided with a train in southern Jackson County earlier this week, Dawson A. Vest, has passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck.
Original: The Indiana State Police (ISP) responded to a car versus train collision near the Jackson/Scott County Line Monday evening. The 6:30 p.m. crash resulted in the car’s driver being airlifted, with life-threatening injuries, to a Louisville hospital.
The investigation indicates that a car driven by Dawson A. Vest, 21, of Austin, was westbound on Jackson County Road 775S, just west of US 31, and for an unknown reason, his vehicle entered a railroad crossing into the path of a northbound CSX train.
The train collided with the driver’s side of the car, causing it to roll. Vest was ejected from the vehicle.
The intersection has railroad crossing signs as well as stop signs for traffic. C.R. 775S was closed for about three hours for crash cleanup and investigation. US 31 was also closed for a short time.
