SOUTHCENTRAL, Ind. – Area cities and towns are observing the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorism attacks on the USA with remembrances this Saturday, September 11.
Columbus will hold its ceremony outside at Columbus City Hall beginning promptly at 8:40 a.m. A moment of silence will be observed to correspond with the attacks, at 8:46 a.m., when the first plane struck the World Trade Center North Tower. The nearly 3000 Americans who perished in New York, at the Pentagon, and on the United Airlines flight will be honored. The Columbus Fire/Police Color Guard is participating. The September 11 memorial observance will last about 30 minutes.
Seymour will mark the anniversary with a public ceremony at Shields Park on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony will include music, speakers, and prayer. The Seymour Fire Department will present the flags, and there will be two moments of silence, one to signal when the first tower was hit and the second for the second tower. To pay tribute to those lives taken, 2,977 flags will be placed in the park by local boy scouts. Seymour Mayor Matt Nicholson and Fire Chief Brad Lucas will serve as speakers.
Edinburgh is also planning a remembrance ceremony for Saturday at 4 p.m., at 203 S. Walnut St.
