COLUMBUS, Ind. – Officials at the Columbus Fire Department (CFD) say two adults are very lucky to get out of a fire in their Columbus residence on Friday afternoon. The blaze broke out in the home while the couple napped.
Firefighters were called to the 700 block of California Street just after 4 p.m. and found that the homeowners had escaped but sustained some minor injuries from the smoke and flames. One occupant was taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation, while the other was treated at the scene for burns, but declined transport.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire but believe an electric space heater is a factor. The blaze was confined to a single room and structural damage to the home was prevented. The house was not equipped with working smoke alarms.
CFD fire officials remind all citizens that working smoke alarms are a must for all residences.
