COLUMBUS, Ind. – In a news release last week, Cummins Inc. said it will soon be unveiling a new natural gas engine for heavy-duty trucks.
The 15-liter natural gas engine is an important part of the Cummins strategy for its path to zero emissions. When powered with renewable natural gas, the system can produce a neutral to negative carbon index, resulting in net greenhouse gas emissions at or below zero.
The new engine provides up to 500 horsepower and will weigh 500 pounds less than comparable 15-liter diesel engines now on the market. It will not require selective catalytic reduction to meet 2024 EPA emission standards.
Cummins believes this natural gas option is a big advancement as a cost-competitive power option to existing diesel powertrains in heavy-duty trucking and is a complement to reducing CO2 emissions.
