COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to a report of a gas odor in the 600 block of Jackson Street on Thursday, at around 9:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they discovered that a construction crew had struck a natural gas line supplying several businesses on Washington Street.
Occupied businesses and residents on the east side of the 500 block of Washington Street were temporarily evacuated during the incident.
CenterPoint Energy isolated the leak and stopped the flow of gas. Fire crews and CenterPoint Energy representatives used gas metering devices to determine the presence of gas inside buildings near where the line had been struck. Using fans, CFD ventilated businesses before allowing occupants to return.
Gas service in the affected area was out of service while repairs were made. No injuries were reported. Firefighters operated at the scene for about an hour.
