PLAINFIELD, Ind. – Duke Energy recently reconfirmed that it is continuing to work with utilities across North America to help protect customers from fraud.
So far in 2021, over 1,700 Duke Energy customers in Indiana reported scam attempts. Across all states served by the company, the pandemic triggered a record number of con attempts with nearly 30,000 reported by customers in 2020. Thankfully, only about 4% fell for the frauds last year, down from more than 9% in 2016.
Duke Energy has again joined forces with utilities across the United States and Canada to bring awareness to these criminal tactics this week, the sixth annual Utility Scam Awareness Week.
Utilities are uniting to combat scammers by spreading awareness, working with telecom partners to remove access to phone lines, and encouraging policymakers to adopt stronger public protections.
