COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Bartholomew County man was arrested last Friday in regards to his alleged involvement in a fatal crash that occurred earlier this month.
The Columbus Police Department (CP)D officers responded to the area of Seventh Street and Central Avenue, on the evening of November 8, in regards to a multi-vehicle crash. Prior to the crash, police say witnesses told them that they had seen a truck, driven by Kevin Shuffitt, 21, of Columbus, traveling at a high rate of speed.
The suspect’s truck reportedly crashed into a vehicle on Seventh Street, near Cottage Avenue, collided with the vehicle a second time, continued driving, and hit a third car at the intersection of Seventh Street and Central Avenue. Jeremy Stillabower, 44, of Columbus, a passenger in the third vehicle later died from his crash injuries.
Formal criminal charges against Shuffitt were filed by the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office on November 19 and he was taken into custody by CPD. He is being held at Bartholomew County Jail without bond on charges of criminal recklessness, reckless driving, and driving while suspended.
