FRANKLIN, Ind. – Indiana State Police (ISP) received an emergency call Tuesday, at around 9:45 a.m., about a disabled vehicle that was partially straddling the left lane and left shoulder of northbound I-65, near mile marker 86. As police were responding, they began receiving reports about a serious crash at the same location.
Law enforcement found a young child entrapped in a car seat in the back seat of a heavily damaged car. The three-year-old was extricated and emergency life-saving efforts ensued. The child was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased. Two adults were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A preliminary investigation of the accident was conducted by ISP crash reconstructionists. It was determined that a vehicle had pulled to the left side of the roadway and stopped in the precarious position for unknown reasons. A northbound pick-up truck struck the rear of the stationary car.
The northbound lanes of I-65 were closed for nearly four hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage removed. The inquiry is ongoing at this time.
