COLUMBUS, Ind. – As Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers was patrolling U.S. 31 one evening late last week he observed a vehicle along the right side of the roadway with its hazard lights on. The sheriff stopped to assist.
The driver was identified as Benjamin Stevens, 38, of Columbus. He told the sheriff that he had run out of gas and someone was on the way to help. While speaking with the man, Sheriff Myers said he detected the odor of pot.
The suspect advised there was a small amount of marijuana in a container inside the car and showed Myers where it was. It allegedly contained several drug-related items and possible marijuana. The substance was field-tested and it was positive for marijuana.
Stevens supposedly admitted that the drugs were his. He was arrested, jailed, and booked for possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a syringe, and a warrant.
