EDINBURGH, Ind. – The Edinburgh Police Department, Edinburgh Fire and Rescue, and the Town of Edinburgh announced Friday they are teaming up with the National Safe Haven Alliance to provide a safe location for the delivery of an unwanted infant with no questions asked.
Edinburgh officials say their intent is to provide this safe location to be able to take custody of the child and get the infant medically checked out. The baby will then be turned over to the Department of Child Services, which will provide a safe caring home for the child to grow up in.
The Indiana Safe Haven Law enables a person to give up an unwanted infant anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution, as long as the baby has no signs of intentional abuse. No information is required of the person who surrenders the child.
The Safe Haven locations are the Edinburgh Police Department, at 200 Main St., and Edinburgh Fire and Rescue, at 203 S. Walnut St.
